The formation of an organization to represent the hundreds of mechatronics firms locally is being hailed as a step forward in the transformation of Windsor from an automotive capital to an automation capital.

Canadian Association of Mold Makers president Jonathon Azzopardi announced his association would join forces with the new group at Tuesday’s Emerging Technologies in Automation Conference held at Caesar’s Windsor.

Mechatronics covers firms involved in mechanical engineering, robotics, electronics, telecommunications and systems and control engineering.

“The mechatronics firms have been operating in silos,” Azzopardi said.

“Through our 70 years of experience, mold makers have learned what collaboration, having a voice at the table and creating a cluster can do. We’ve clustered and help each other and we’re stronger for it.”

The Windsor region is now considered one of the world’s three centres of excellence for the tool and die and mold making industries.
